The total score in a football game was 72 points. The winning team scored 12 points more than the losing team. How many points did the winning team score?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[72 \div 2 + 12 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You do 72 divided by 2 first then add it by 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve the following for w and L, the winning and losing scores respectively.\[\{w=L+12,L+w=72\} \]\[\{w=42,L=30\} \]

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

@justin12lo you have to do (72-12) first, then divide by 2. The winners have as many points as the losers, plus another 12 to make 72. Reversing it, if we take away the extra 12 points for the winning team, then the two teams total 60 points...

@whpalmer4 yes sorry you are correct
