A holiday resort has rectangular-shaped pools, including a swimming pool for adults and a wading pool for children. The two pools are similar in shape and have dimensions, in meters, as shown in the figure below. What is the value, in meters, of x? 3 5 7 (Picture in comments)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a)3 b)5 c)7 d)9

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

do you know what makes two polygons SIMILAR?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

proportionate sizing?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yes, so, from the picture we could say that 18(ratio) = x and 30(ration) = x+2 let's call that ratio, "y", so 18y = x and 30y = x+2 now, from the 1st equation, we know x = 18y, so let's use that in the 2nd equation as 30y = (18y)+2 from there, just solve by "y", and that's your ratio

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 18/30 = x/(x + 2) 18(x + 2) = 30(x) 18x + 36 = 30x 36 = 12x x= 3m?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yes

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

the ratio is \(\frac{1}{6}\) from the bigger pool to the smaller one

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so, 18/6 is 3 :)
