1/3 + 2/5

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

When adding or subtracting fractions...you need to first find a common denominator.....what number (smallest number) do both 3 and 5 go into evenly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=11/15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. First find a common denominator. You do that by multiplying both top and bottom by the other fraction's denominator. \[\frac{ 1 }{ 3} \times 5 = \frac{ 5 }{ 15 }\] \[\frac{ 2 }{ 5} \times 3 = \frac{ 6 }{ 15 }\] 2. Add the two together \[\frac{ 6 }{ 15 }+\frac{ 5 }{ 15 }=\frac{ 11 }{ 15 }\]
