The length of a rectangle is 8 inches less than 3 times the width. The perimeter is 24 inches. Find the width.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

So what you have here...is 2 equations The perimeter is 24 inches... You know the perimeter of a rectangle can be found by using the equation 2L + 2W = P (length)(width)(Perimeter) and you know the LENGTH is 8 inches less than 3 times the width L = 3W - 8 right? So now you have 2 equations 2L + 2W = 24 L = 3W - 8 What would you do next?
