Why was NATO formed following world war II?
Yes, SEATO and NATO were formed after World War II, but they weren't formed because of the war. See, Japan lost when the US used its atomic bomb twice. The US didn't share this plan with its allies the Russians. So after the war, the Russians began to be suspicious of the Americans, worrying that it might build up its technology and the Russians were terrified. So the Russians built up their arms, and the Americans saw it and were terrified too, so it tried to produce bigger, more powerful arms. It went back and forth and back and forth, both sides trying to gain allies around the world to keep the other at bay. This was the Cold War. Animosity on both sides, fear, competition. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070507213752AAqWB8E
