Compounds and mixtures are substances composed of more than one type of element. many substances such as steel (iron and carbon, as well as other trace elements) and most other substances are composed of more than one element. substances that are composed of one type of element are pure (or if multiple forms of the substance exist, then allotropes, such as allotropes of carbon differing diamond from pencil lead).
A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements are chemically joined. Water, salt, and sugar are examples of compounds.
