Carpet sells for $2 per square foot and will cost you $360 to recarpet your room. If your room is 20 feet long, how many feet wide is it?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Assuming the entire cost is due to the square footage of the carpet (good for the problem, not true in real life!), we can conclude that the area of the carpet = $360 / ($2/ft^2) = 180 ft^2. Now, we know that the length of the room is 20 feet, and we assume that it is a rectangle. Area of a rectangle is l*w. If the length is 20, and 180 = 20*w, what is w?
