1. Bryan is an art sculptor and is creating an art series made entirely of similar figures. He buys a Sponge Bob Square Pants figure and decides he wants to make a larger version that has sides 15 times bigger. If the area of the figure is 12.5 cm2, what is the area of his sculpture?

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

Let us assume Sponge bob square pants is shaped like a rectangle--" Since only his pants are square" now you find the area of the it by the formula Area = Length x Width.

OpenStudy (rajee_sam):

now the sculptor is increasing the dimensions 15 times. So your new length will be 15 x old Length. So let us keep the old length L and new length NL. So your NL = 15 x L Similarly your width is also increased 15 times. So your NW = 15x W Now the area of the new figure will be = NL x NW = 15x L x 15 x W = 225 x L x W We are given L x W = 12.5 So your new Area will be = 225 x 12.5 = 2812.5 cm²
