translate the phrase into a mathematical expression and then simplify. Six times a number decreased by four times the same number. Write the corresponding mathematical expression_____ The simplified expression is________

OpenStudy (reemii):

first, give a name (letter) to "a number", then read again the sentence. just this will help.

IM LOST @reemii

OpenStudy (reemii):

for the name of "a number", i choose \(x\). The sentence becomes: six times "\(x\) decreased by four" times \(x\). \(x\) decreased by four is \(x-4\). Now continue..

OpenStudy (reemii):

so the answer starts with \(6\times \dots\). what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6x-4x

OpenStudy (reemii):

that's right. (i thought the question was "6 times (a number decreased by 4) times the number." but what you did is better: "6 times a number" - "4 times the same number". Yes you're right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what would be the corresponding mathematical expression? and what would be the simplified expression? @reemii

OpenStudy (reemii):

you wrote 6x-4x. that is the answer to the first question. simplifying: 2x, isn't it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was confused thts y i asked but thanks for ya help @reemii

OpenStudy (reemii):

yw, if you're not confused anymore than it's great.
