What might happen if a website doesn't meet web standards?

In reality, not much. Most sites do not meet all sets of standards. This is an unfortunate thing because it can have drastic effects on the disabled.

In a class, depends on what your book or professor is stressing. Should be on a section on the importance of standards or perhaps a side bar as you go over standards.

sometimes this will cause slightest problems but if you test it in main browsers and major screen resolution this will be fine.
