If a trait is not well adapted to current local conditions, what might be the reasons why it is not, and how might one check to see which of those reason(s) is correct?

many possibilities are there for example may be the gene is recessive
mutation occur etc. we can check it but only in molecular level like at the time of crossing over in prophase stage

yea it does for example mosquitoes can u see they are adapting themselves acc. to antidote and surviving...
