An arithmetic series has first term 444 and common difference -3. Is 231 a term in this series? If so, which term is it? If not, how do you tell?

Common difference would be the difference between each term. This sequence is: 444 - 3n. To know if 231 is part of it, you plug in 444 - 3n = 231 and solve for n. if n is an integer (whole number like 8 or 55), 231 is a term in the series. n isn't a round number, it isn't.
