PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Define the domino theory and the Brezhnev doctrine and discuss how they affected the foreign policies of both the united states and the soviet union during the cold war?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The domino theory was the theory that after one country falls to communism the surrounding countries would quickly follow. This made the United States more devoted to keeping communism from spreading.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Brezhnev Doctrine was a Soviet Union foreign policy that stated when a socialist country was being forced to capitalism it was a problem and concern for all socialist countries. This doctrine influenced the Soviet Union's policies about the United States. In turn making them enemies, considering both the US's and the Soviet Union's policies were complete opposites of each other.

thank you so much! do you think you can give me 2 or 3 examples of this? please @Notsogoodatmath

You're welcome, and sure. Let me think of a few.

The domino theory affected war policies that related to the United State's involvement around the world and in other countries governments. I guess you could say in a way it led to the United States need to 'fix' governments, so they do not end up communist. China, North Korea, and even Cuba were eventually all pulled into conflict with the United States because of it's belief in the domino theory.

Okay, now some examples of Brezhnev Doctrine's affect on foreign policies. This one is a little more difficult for me to answer, but really the Brezhnev Doctrine is basically saying that the Soviet Union will stick up for or sway any country that is being forced or convinced to switch to capitalism from communism. While the United States was trying to prevent communism the Soviet Union was supporting it, and encouraging it. In turn this Brezhnev Doctrine affected the war policies of the Soviet Union as well. The Brezhnev Doctrine and Domino Theory created high tension between the United States and Soviet Union. Ultimately the Brezhnev Doctrine changed the Soviet Union's policies towards the United States.
