1 - For which determinant does the inverse of a matrix not exist? A. -1 B. 0 C. 1 D. Undefined

OpenStudy (amistre64):

since we have to divide by the determinant value to work out an inverse ... which value is a divide by no-no?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know what that means. would it be B then?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct, since dividing by 0 is not allowed ... the determinant cant be 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, so can you help me answer this one then as well: What is the product of a matrix and its inverse? A. 1 B. -1 C. Identity matrix D. Square matrix i,m not very familiar with matrixs and these are my only two questions about them.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

an inverse has the property, that an operation on an element and its inverse produce the identity element ... in this case, 1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

not 1 ... had a stray thought

OpenStudy (amistre64):

identity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, thats what i thought but i just wasnt sure. but thank you so much. (:

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome :) in multiplication of numbers, the product of inverses is 1; and an identity matrix has a diagonal of 1s and all else zeros ... in any case, an element and its inverse produces an identity element :)
