Find the value of x in the figure below

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

we're assuming these are 2 SIMILAR triangles, thus the only difference between is the RATIO or PROPORTION, thus $$ \cfrac{x}{14}=\cfrac{10}{8}\\ $$ then just solve for "x" to get your ratio

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, not the ratio, the side length in this case

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jdoe0001 I still don't know how to solve it though :( I'm horrible at math and have been working on this like all day.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, ahemm if you multiply both sides by 14 $$ \cfrac{x}{14}=\cfrac{10}{8} \implies \color{blue}{(14)}\cfrac{x}{14}=\cfrac{10}{8}\times\color{blue}{(14)} \implies ? $$ what would that give you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jdoe0001 I got 17.5, is that right or did I do it wrong?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

that's what I got, yes

Thank you! :)
