What does Chargaff's rule state? And what did Watson and Crick do?
Chargaff's rule stated that DNA from any cell of all organisms should have a 1:1 ratio of pyrimidine and purine bases and that adennine is to thymine while guanine is to cytosine.
if you have 40% G-C, that means you have 20% G and 20% C. hence, you have 60% A-T pairs.
So it doesn't mean that it has to be 50-50, right?
50:50 is the same as 1:1 ratio or 1.
Duh! Okay, sorry, I wasn't thinking there. What about Watson and Crick?
Watson and crick found out about the structure of DNA (spiral staircase shape)
What about them? They proposed the structure of DNA being a double helix.
Along with MANY other things.
Okay.. and what about Transcription and Translation? I can't recall which is which.
What does it sound like? Translation kind of sounds like "translate" right? And to translate means to kind of interpret information..... transcribe is to copy...to copy something onto something or whatever...
Oh! So in translation, the DNA is decoded? Or.. yeah?
yes. it the mRNA is transcribed into a protein. For instance, if you speak english but you need someone to translate for you instructions on how to rob a bank, WHICH was given to you by your boss. you must ask someone to translate for you. Well, in molecular terms, that translator is called a ribosome. Ribosome "translates" the english instructions that mr. big boss gave to you to the chinese man that you asked to rob a bank. it's very similar.
That was pretty complicated, but the mRNA is transcribed?
DNA is transcribed.
sorry i means mRNA is translated.
Ohhhh! Okay, that's fine, just confuse me a bit. :) So what does tRNA do then?
tRNA matches up with the codons like for ex- ACG would be TGC i think
Urrrrrgghhh.. So I get the whole matching A with T and C with G.. but when it's RNA, A is paired with U, which is uracil.. right?
if you have any issues with translation this youtube video is really helpful ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bLEDd-PSTQ
Oh thank you!
