OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

For the OpenStudy mobile site, wouldn't it be awesome if you could pin it to the homescreen and you'd see an icon you could launch on iOS?

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I've made a couple icons for the mobile site that an admin could implement.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

To implement the icons, just paste this in the header. This will allow anyone with an iOS device to pin the mobile site on the homescreen, just like an app. This is called a web clip app. <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/URL_TO_PICTURE.png"/> By default, it will add a gloss to the icon. If you want it removed (like in the picture I attached of the iOS homescreen), just do: <link rel="apple-touch-icon-precomposed" href="/URL_TO_PICTURE.png"/>

OpenStudy (zale101):

OMG OMG OMG Great Awesome Cool

OpenStudy (zale101):

The first one looks better

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I agree.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You really are working hard with that mobile app thing. I hope they choose you to design it!:p

thomaster (thomaster):

make one for android too lol. there's like 3 times as many android users than ios

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

hehe thanks @wmckinely Though this is separate from the mobile app design, this is for the mobile website :) This would give it the ability to be launched as an app.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You, sir, are awesome.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Thanks @BulletWithButterflyWings :)

OpenStudy (ja1):

Wait isn't this whole thing going to be an app? So the icon would be included.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

@ja1 Don't confuse the designs we are making for the app with the website version of OpenStudy.

OpenStudy (ja1):

Ah ok I understand now

OpenStudy (ja1):

Question, wouldn't this be like some sort of "bookmarking" for the website? If it is, does Apple even allow that?

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Apple even allow that? This is documented on the official Apple iOS docs. Many major sites use it, like if you pin Google News to the homescreen (these are called 'web clip' apps) it has an icon. Here's the documentation: http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/SafariWebContent/ConfiguringWebApplications/ConfiguringWebApplications.html

OpenStudy (ja1):

AHHH yes Web Clips, man I forgot about that, but that requires a little extra work from the user so I don't know if many will be willing :/

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Work from the user? :\

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

You mean work for the admins? @JA1 Well I gave them some cut-n-paste scripts...

OpenStudy (ja1):

No I mean users would have to install the webclip and stuff

OpenStudy (uri):

Nice,Sean. :3

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

If you're on iOS, and you want an icon that will launch Safari and take you to a specific page, this is easily done. Launch Safari. Go to the page. Tap the sharing button (little rectangle with a curved arrow along the top) in the toolbar. Tap "Add to Home Screen" on the popup menu that appears. Edit the title as desired and tap the "Add" button. Park the icon where you want it.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I know that, @whpalmer4, but this script would add an icon, because they'res none as default.
