its the membrane lined cavity behind the nose and mouth and it connects to the esophagus. Its function is that its like a passageway for the food to travel to the stomach. hope this helped

Pharynx is the common pathway for air and food. 5 inch long, contains circular and longitudinal muscles.
Vocalization and Equalizing Air Pressure in Middle Ear are two other functions.
Pharynx coordinates both inspiration and swallowing while eating, with the help of a flap called epiglottis. If this coordination is missing, choking and aspiration can occur, which are fatal conditions.
