|x-8| is always gonna be a positive value so -|x-8|+3 then u are taking - of that positive value and adding 3 lets see what this does -|x-8| will be more negative when |x-8| is getting bigger, so when x-8 = 0 it is -0 +3 = 3 when |x-8| > 0 then y value is getting less than 3
