Polymerization and the break down of a polymer are two opposite reactions. What role does a water molecule play in both of them?

one is a condensation reaction where a molecule of water forms from the combination of monomers and separates from the chain. the other is a hydrolysis reaction where water is used to break apart the chain in it's monomer constituents.
