\[\left( a+b \right)\left( a-b \right)=a ^{2}-b ^{2}\]
you are simply mutiplying in the same manner that you were taught to multiply back inthe 3rd grade .... im sure the only thing you are forgetting is the monkier "FOIL" which is ironic since it is meant to be a memory device to help you recall how to mutlipy it ....
if we were to multiply the numbers: 17 and 11 let 17 = 10 + 7 let 11 = 10 + 1 10 + 7 10 + 1 ------- 10 + 7 100 + 70 ---------------- 100 + 80 + 7 let 10 = x: (x+7)(x+1) x + 7 x + 1 ------- x + 7 x^2 + 7x ---------------- x^2 + 8x + 7
6x - 2 6x +2 ------ 12x -4 36x^2 -12x --------------- add em up
