It kills insects :) But it also had consequenses for the birds who ate the poisoned insects.

The thing is, DDT is not water soluble. So when you drink milk from a cow who ate grass that was sprayed with DDT, you're drinking DDT contaminated milk. And you can't get rid of it because it doesn't dissovle in water (you can't pee it out)
