A rectangular garden has a width that is 8 feet less than twice the length. Fine the dimensions if the perimeter is 20 feet.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well if the length is l width = 2l - 8 so the perimeter is normally P = 2l + 2w but for your question you have 20 = 2l + 2(2l - 8) which means 20 = 2l + 4l - 16 all you need to do is collect like terms and then solve for l when you have l substitute it into Width = 2l - 8 to find the dimensions.
