OpenStudy (chaylaceyx3):

Find the standard form of the equation of the parabola with a focus at (7, 0) and a directrix at x = -7.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

where would the vertex be located?

OpenStudy (chaylaceyx3):

i have no idea, y2 = 2x y = x2 y2 = 8x y = x2, but these are the options, but idk how to do it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

there is a geometric construct .... but i never really remember it: the setup suggest that this is a parabola on its side ... the focus is on the x axis

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that narrows it doe to 2 possibilities of y^2 = ____

OpenStudy (chaylaceyx3):

Ok, so I know the standard form of the equation of a parabola with a horixontal axis and vertex at (h,k) is (y-k)^2=4p(x-h), where p is not equal to zero. And the focus and directrix are each p units away from the vertex... but thats all I understood
