OpenStudy (bekkah323):

Oil-painting frame. The perimeter of the ornate frame of an oil painting is 146 in. The width is 5 in. less than the length. Find the dimensions?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well we know this is a rectangle since the width and length aren't the same The perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W and equals 146 P = 2L + 2W the width is 5in less than the length w = L - 5 So now you know what 'w' equals....so you can substitute that into that first equation you have 146 = 2L + 2(L - 5) now solve for L
