Breaking this up into pieces will make it easier to visualize. The first part: one third, you know what one third is. Second part: of a number, when you have 3 "of" something you use which operation? In algebra you use 'what' to represent "any number"? Third part: subtracted from 13, well you know how to subtract "from" 13. Answer each of the parts and then put them together for your final answer.
