use the quadratic formula to solve the equation x^2+3=-4x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay first bring everything to one side so your equation = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now do you know what the quadratic formula is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is it. now bring everything to the left in your equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't understand how

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, this is your equation --> x^2+3=-4x now im going to bring everything to the left --->\[x^2+4x+3=0\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, now what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now this is the general formula for a quadratic ax^2+bx+c so now what from your equation is a, b and c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no clue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay here ill give you an example in this equation 2x^2 + 3x + 5 a=2 b=3 and c=5 in this equation 6x^2+9x+12 a=6 b=9 and c=12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for x^2+4x+3 what is a, b and c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a=2 b=4 c=3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b and c are right but a=1 remember x^2 is really 1x^2. and its general formula is ax^2 so a=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but yes a=1 b=4 and c=3 now just sub these into the quadratic equation that I gave you above

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k hold on i'll try

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure, you shpuld get two answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does the plus sigh with the line under it mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol because you have to get two answers for x (as it is a parabola and will intersect at the x axis in two place)s there are actually two quadratic equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one is -b + so on and the other is -b - something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what are your answers that you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its actually -1 and -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh oops. Thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem, glad to help!
