Did you notice in my example that the first term is 11 and to calculate to each new term I added 3? See how that relates to my formula?

but what does the tn=tn−1 part mean?

tn represents a term like t8. tn-1 represents the term before t7. What the formula says is: If you want to know a term you have to look at the one before and do something to it. In you problem it said: To get a term look at the one before and subtract 8 from it.
