it was used the kill vegetation so that the enemy couldn't eat.

Agent Orange is a defoliant and so kills the trees and undergrowth that the Vietcong used to hide in and also it killed the foliage which covered the Ho Chi Minh trail down which the VC used to travel from north to south Vietnam.
