For Germany, what factors led to the rise to the totalitarian government?

Poor economic conditions, massive unemployment, bitterness over the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, loss of national prestige...take your pick. Germany's Weimar Republic had barely gotten to a point of stability when the Great Depression knocked it back down making a miserable situation worse and opening the door to extremism promising everything under the sun to make things better to a desperate populace.
