need help asap ! history question *no one answers in the history section*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why is Alfred the Great seen as important to the national identity of England? He freed England from Spanish rule. He reformed the system of English law by establishing a monarchy. He rallied the entire English population around a single leader. He encouraged tolerance for the practice of religions other than Christianity.

OpenStudy (andriod09):

The King Alfred millenary celebrations of 1901 commemorated the death of the Anglo-Saxon king, and occurred mainly in Winchester, ancient capital of England. They took the form of many events, including an exhibition and production of material culture. [Through the study of these events and associated material culture it is possible to ascertain to what extent national identity was being promoted through the celebrations and how the history and image of King Alfred was manipulated to create this sense of national identity. Thus material culture becomes a physical reminder of certain ideologies and perpetuates them.]
