Hi! How many carbon atoms does a glucose 'ring' have?? I have been told 5! Where does the sixth one go?

OpenStudy (rane):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are six carbons in glucose ring. You have been told wrong.

OpenStudy (rane):

why is that so?

OpenStudy (rane):

theere r 6 carbons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I read it in a book too!

OpenStudy (rane):

then whts the prob?

OpenStudy (rane):

who said there r 5

OpenStudy (frostbite):

It is because on edges on the ring is a oxygen. So the ring consist of 5 carbon and 1 oxygen.

OpenStudy (frostbite):

also demonstrated here in the following attachment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@frostbite so it means its correct when i say there are 5 carbon atoms in a glucose ring?

OpenStudy (frostbite):

You are right when you say there are 5 carbon in the ring, but we say it is a 6 membered ring :)
