I need help with Inscribed Angles...

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi, I'll show you the equation.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

okie...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Line AB is tangent to O. If AO = 12 and BC = 25, what is AB? The diagram is not to scale.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

hint : OC = OA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that because they both are radii?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm, okay.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good, you can do the rest.. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would Line AB equal 37?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because if BC=25 and CO=12 25+12=37.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

OB = 37 OA = 12 use pythagora

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

AB^2 + OA^2 = OB^2 AB^2 + 12^2 = 37^2 solve AB

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also worth noting- lines tangent to circles create a 90 degree angle to the radius of the circle which is why you are able to use pythagorean theorem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got AB^2+144=1369 What's the next step?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

subtract 144 both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 1225 then I square rooted it, and got 35

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats right ! good work :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha, awesome. Thank you so much! School's almost out and Im having a hard time with these!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :)
