Discuss how the wave model of light and the particle model of light explain rectilinear propagation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you want to know the effects of rectilinear propagation? My explanation is mostly based on wave theory of light, So let me know if you want me to post something related (:

I'm just working through this assignment and its the last question .... its really long and tedious. I have to describe various characteristics of light using the wave model and particle model of light. I get what linear propagation is but I just wasn't really sure how to explain it using the models of light. Anything would be helpful I guess lol

First thing is that rectilinear propagation of light is virtual interpretation of eye caused by diffraction. But i want to answer the question straight forward. So, you have to understand that there are millions of phenomena in nature which can be explained by rectilinear propagation of light. Most of the expert of physics want to explain all these phenomena by wave theory of light but due to some approximation wave phenomena is treated like rectilinear propagation. So now i am coming to the point, Phenomena caused by rectilinear propagations are: 1. Shadow 2. Image formation by reflection ( like image in mirror ) 3. Image formation by refraction ( like image in water ) 4. pin hole camera image formation 5. periscope working ( reflection phenomena ) 6. Spectrum formation by prism by dispersion 7. Rainbow phenomena is also explained by rectilinear propagation 8. Blue colour of sky due to scattering is also explained by it 9. Twinkling of stars 10. Mirage in hot places 11. Looming in cold places 12. Flattering of sun disk at the time of dun rise and sun set 13. reddish colour of rising of "new moon' 14. Dichromatism 15. Tyndall effect 16. sprites 17. light pillar 18. Zodiacal light effect 19. crepuscular light effect 20. cloud irridescence 21. sylvashine effect 22.Glories 23. Brilliance of diamond ( Total internal reflection ) 24. Umov effect 25. Purkinjie image This should surely be helpful
