Why was there good reason to fear a war between the United States and the Soviet Union?

Well, Soviet Union had nuke. Just like America. But Soviet Union had more nuke during the middle of the cold war, and had deadlier bomb. Ex: Tsar Bomba. 
America was afraid that the Soviet Union and them will cause a nuclear war which can cause the destruction of Earth!

It is also because Soviet Union had more land. The Soviet Union made the domino theory, where if China becomes communism, then the whole Asia will become communism. When Soviet Union gains more land, it becomes extremely powerful.
