Compare the square root of 27 to 5 7/9. Is it greater than, less than, or equal to?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

All you need is a calculator. Can you use it to get sqrt(27) and change 5 7/9 into a decimal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The square root of a larger number will always be larger because the root is just the number needed to be multiplied by itself to get that number. For example 5 x 5 = 25 therefore 5 is the sqrt of 25

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

5 * 5 = 25 6 * 6 = 36 27 is much closer to 25 than to 36, so the root of 27 is much closer to 5 than to 6. 5 7/9 has a fractional part of 7/9 which is much closer to 1 than to zero, so 5 7/9 is much closer to 6 than to 5.
