Well, since it makes you feel good, it helps to improve what with what you doing; No specific genres at all, just the music that you like. I sugest everyone to try to listen and search everytime for new kind of unknown music for your 'ear'. (Also i sugest some J. S. Bach and Pantera)

Music tends to lighten the mood depending on the type of music. It tends to deepen emotions. Like if you are extremely happy and your favorite song comes on... You kind of go crazy. If you are very upset and an angry song comes on, you tend to jam out and sometimes feel better after. Same with being sad and sad songs. It's a way to listen and relate. It definately makes you feel better :)

It is proven that learning an instrument improves cognition and brain development. The earlier a person starts their study of music, the more profound the effect. It has been observed that primary school students that learn an instrument perform better (on average) across all subjects than their non-musical peers. Music makes you smart. The question of whether or not being smarter will improve your quality of life is debatable, but I tend to think it will.
