solve 5x^2-3x=(7x^2+5x)-(2x^2+16)

hartnn (hartnn):

combine like terms, whats 7x^2-2x^2 on right side ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x

hartnn (hartnn):

5x or 5x^2 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x^2

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, now bring that 5x^2 on left side, you know how ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtraction?

hartnn (hartnn):

correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[5x ^{2}-3x=7x ^{2}+5x-2x ^{2}-16\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it becomes \[8x=16\] and x=2

hartnn (hartnn):

so, what will u get after subtracting 5x^2 on both sides ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is -2 ?

hartnn (hartnn):

-2 ? how u got that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because when i subtract -5x from the left side which was -5x-3x it gave me only -3x on the left side. then on the right side i was left with 5x+16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then i subtracted 5x and subtracted it from -3x

hartnn (hartnn):

actually on right side, it'll be 5x-16 because (7x^2+5x)-(2x^2+16) = 5x^2 +5x -16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u have to subtract 5x from both sides so u will get -8x=-16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

therefore x=2

hartnn (hartnn):

then as per what you wrote, i am sure you got -8x on left -8x = -16 will actually give u x=2 got this ?
