A cube has a side length of 2x + 1. A. Write and simplify an expression for the volume of the cube. (10 points) B. What is the volume of the cube if x = 4 inches? Remember to label your answer. (5 points)

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

Do you know the formula for the volume of a cube?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i dont there was not one given

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

Well that was obviously something you would have covered before as you have to know it to answer the question.

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

You first work out the area of the base. Then multiply that by the height of the cube.

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

So the formula is basically (Side*Side)*Side. Note this only really works with proper square cubes.

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

So for question A you know that the length of one side = 2x + 1

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

Therefore the area of the cube = (2x + 1*2x + 1)*2x + 1

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

The answer for question A would be that simplified..

OpenStudy (thesecret20111):

The answer for question B would be the same but you would substitute x for 4 inches. Giving you (2*4inch + 1*2*4inch + 1)*2*4inch + 1 Solve that and you'll have your final answer.
