I need Algebra 2 help please have a final tomorrow and I am stuck on this question. Nine qualified applicants apply for a part-time job. If the manager randomly hires 3 of them, what is the probability that he hires the 3 oldest?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

There is only one way to hire the 3 oldest (if you can only hire 3 total) this is out of 9 C 3 = (9!)/(3!*(9-3)!) = 84 ways total to hire 3 people (from a pool of 9 applicants)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the probability is 1/84

Thank you for helping me but can you explain a little more

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm using the combination formula which is n C r = (n!)/(r!*(n-r)!)

ok got thanks
