Why is the concept of continents open to interpretations?

OpenStudy (jack1):

"continents are understood to be large, continuous, discrete masses of land, ideally separated by expanses of water." what's "large" to you? should Tasmania be considered a continent? should India? should Greenland? Most people believe that there are 7 continents, and yet there are only 5 distinct landmasses ie why are Asia and Europe considered different continents? should the Americas be thought of as one landmass/ continent? Food for thought
