The sum of the squares of two consecutive positive numbers is 85. What is the smaller number? @Noemi95

sam (.sam.):

Try to put this in equation form Then let x be the first number Then x + 1 is the second We know that the sum of the squares = 85 So \[x^2 +(x + 1)^2 = 85\] Solve for x, you should get 2 numbers, the positive one should be your answer
