Will Give Medal For Correct Answer And Best Explanation! Use the quadratic formula to solve the equation. If necessary round to the nearest hundredth. x^2 + 3 = -4x

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

first you need to equal the equation to 0 so you have x^2+4x+3 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so substract the 4x, then what?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

do you know the quadratic formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Set it in the proper form for the Quadratic Formula by adding 4x to both sides, leaving us with\[x ^{2}+4x+3=0\] Thus a=1, b=4, and c=3. These can be plugged into the formula for the answer. Namely: \[x=\frac{ -4 \pm \sqrt{(4)^{2}-4(1)(3)} }{ 2(1) }=\frac{ -4 \pm \sqrt{16-12} }{ 2 }=\frac{ -4 \pm 2 }{ 2 }=\left\{ -1, -3 \right\}\]
