It's necessary to do that because after combining the fractions altogether, you might get the common factors in the numerator and denominator. When working rational expressions it is important because inorder to solve the rational equation you neeed to simplify which you do by factoring.  To solve or reduce rational expressions, the problem needs to simplified by factoring out common terms, and then the common terms will cancel each other out. With more practice, a person develops skills with the steps involved with factoring, solving and simplifying.
