Line segment XW is congruent to line segment ZW both create a straight line but has a bisector that creates a 90 degree angle how would i explain this as a reason in a proof?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

is that all you're given?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm assuming you want to prove that the two triangles XWY and ZWY are congruent right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

|dw:1371089954518:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

we know that XW = WZ (given by the tick marks) angle XWY = angle ZWY because they are both right angles (all right angles are congruent and equal to 90 degrees) finally, YW = YW (reflexive property)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It wants me to prove that line segment XY is congruent to ZY

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

put this all together and you can use the SAS postulate to prove that triangle XWY = triangle ZWY

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the last step is to use CPCTC to say that XY = YZ

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

CPCTC = corresponding parts of congruent triangles are congruent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For XW = ZW what else would i be able to put as a reason

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's given because that's exactly what those tick marks mean

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you have the same tick mark on two segments, then those segments are the same length
