The age of the user should be displayed. It helps in judging how you must approach a certain question asked by the user. For example, you really don't need to tell a person about complex roots of an equation, in case he is 13, do you?
this website is only spose to be accessed by 13 and older
and there is nothing wrong with informing people about complex roots regardless of their age. They will either not understand it, or they will.
Well, it's a waste of time for the replying person. And it's not just about complex roots, there are a lot of concepts. And it wouldn't be like they won't understand it, they will be half-baked about it, which is pretty unhealthy. Besides, I don't see the harm in displaying the age. For one, I could ask help from a college student, given I've just passed out of high school, instead of asking help from a kid.
you dont see the harm in an openly accessed internet site aimed at minors ... displaying the age of the users?
The mindset of the asker is moot. Or would you perfer their IQ scores to be posted along with their ages?
Hey Facebook displays it. The birth date, that is. You mean from paedophiles? Well, with the amount of cyber-bullying that goes on in the chat, I believe that paedophiles wouldn't be the biggest problem. And well, maybe, people will take a sympathetic view of the minors who are being bullied, and stand for them. It has it's good sides as well. :) Plus, with the age displayed, you don't need to explain everything to an older student. It is expected they know the fundamentals.
I couldn't agree more with @amistre64. Age doesn't matter, it's life-long learning. And paedos... get what I mean?
.... perhaps those 42 year olds that have decided to go to college and havent had the practice at the distributive law need to inform others that they are waht .... old and inept?
And I know that if some people knew my real age, they would treat me differently. There's a lot of bias envolved.
Of course, learning is life long. I myself am a serious patroniser of that thought. But, yeah, the bias is involved, you're right.
and, i would say that the person replying determines for themselves what constitutes a waste of their time.
But this is a study forum, so if people should be more open-minded towards teaching and learning, rather than biasing. And if someone is conceited, they should be reported.
spose a situation: 15 year old david gives a correct response, information and insightful 28 year old bob comes in and offers a completly rediculous solution .... the asker doesnt know the solution ... so should they assume 28 is smarter than 15?
But, @amistre64 : umm, don't you think that asking a 15 year old ' if one can switch majors while moving from undergrad to graduate levels' is pointless? PS: I have always believed that a fool, when he grows old, becomes an old fool. So I agree with that viewpoint.
learning is not related to age or school grade. There are enough educated 15 yr olds that can teach math professors a new thing or two :) Ive personally learned more from reading old textbooks than I have sitting in the classrooms. And i know a few other overachievers on this site too
my teacher was trying to go thru the floor and ceiling function .... she drew a line side to side to match up floor and ceiling. I suggested she draw her line so that it actually points up to the ceiling and down to the floor would make life a whole lot simpler for her :)
but what could i expect .. shes younger than me ;)
Few other overachievers? Was that a sarcastic comment directed at me? o.O Btw, that's quite a funny and an ingenious suggestion. It is actually pretty difficult to draw from floor to the ceiling.
I sense conflict. Close this.
lol, theres no conflict, just debate
But this is something to prove my point.
Why @dumbsearch2 ? This is a healthy debate. I don't know about you, but I'm enjoying it. join in, it's fun! :D
doesnt OCW use this site as an online classroom? i never did understand those other subjects too well.
and what is a snog?
from the icon, it looks like its one of those adult contented sites lol
@amistre64 : OCW Classical Mechanics is clearly Newtonian Mechanics. Now, that reply from the other fellow, uses Einsteinian concepts to explain gravity. There are actually mathematical explanations for it (I've studied out of interest, but never fully understood them. Come on, they are used in Graduate studies mainly). Anyway, don't you think that the other blokes reply was made unnecessarily complicated.
I'n not saying my answer was any good... but neither was his.
There is a lot of agism that occurs for different reasons. Why show the age and encourage it? If I was 70, and could answer your question, would it matter? But once a teen knows someone is 70, they discount the validity of the answer in some societies and value it more in others, oddly enough. By removing age, you create a closer community that does not get clouded by these social mores.
Classical Mechanics is Newtonian yes ... but Einstien was Newtonian, just more exacting
I agree with @amistre64 Age isn't so important, as long as you know the answer. I don't want people knowing how old I am... it's just weird.
i usually have to ask my sister how old i am .. she keeps track of those things better than i do ;)
i was 35 for 2 years in a row
Again, I agree with you @e.mccormick . But like I said, people should be here with an open mind. Those who aren't should be suspended for a while. I mean it is a prerequisite to have think clearly , if you want to be thorough knowledgeable. Who cares if you're 15? But, the questions are posted openly. So, when a person replies, who cares if you're 15 or 35- so long as you know the answer @amistre64 ;) Although, there is a lot of difference between Einsteinian and Newtonian physics. But, the point is not that... when we are in a classical mechanics section, why mention wtf Einstein thought? That's flamboyance!
This would be discriminatory, which is contrary to the whole point of learning. I agree with @amistre64 100%.
oh, just be glad they didnt mention complex roots ;)
Wow this question is getting more answers than I expected! :P
@amistre64 Your sarcasm is killing me.
@kutabs Bath in the attention...
I AM bathing! My dirty mind is so clean now! @amistre64 : Hey! I'm a champion at sarcasm, trust me :P
Maybe that certain person wouldn't like to have their private information accessible on here for the public to see. Ever think of that?
as a side tangent: i bought an old calculus textbook at the thrift store for 2 dollars, its very readable. The textbooks at the school bookstore are like 150 dollars and why do they smudge and smear so badly?
i have to go mine some data for half an hour or more ... have fun
I really would need to bathe in a while though. It's ridiculously hot in India! @e.cociuba - Well, that was probably the first point in here. But, age isn't THAT big a disclosure of privacy! Speaking of privacy, how the f*ck does one change the privacy setting in Facebook?
@amistre64 : Thomas and Finney?
Well you would be surprised what people can do and say when they find out your age. Let's just say most of the outcomes are not very good. Ahem! Watch that language. Anyways: Go to ur privacy settings and set it however you want.
Could you imagine how easy this system would be to evade? "Hmm, well, this guy needs help in math, but he's 150 years old... I wonder how I should approach this." I couldn't imagine the trolling. People would set their stats to thousands of years old.
I'd probably set mine to 60 just to mess with people.
@e.cociuba : Yeah, we men do have our ways! And come on, every 13 year old knows the f word.
@Compassionate : With that picture, that's hard to believe! :P 5 year old, shall be more like it! Haha... PS: I'm just kidding! No offence.
Ha ha, I know. This picture is so cute!
Yeah very disrespectful ways that is. A real man treats girls right. :) Never said they didn't. But y use it? U no u could have just put "heck". @kutabs
@e.cociuba : I know! But incidentally respectful men don't get girls usually! Such a shame that girls mostly fall for jerks... :( I could have had, but f-word is so much more diverse! It has got a pretty brilliant history, dating back to 1400's. Heck, isn't even used by kids these days! :P
@Compassionate : It is cute! <<Now, you wouldn't use this to give false evidence for paedophilia and hand me over to the police, right? :P
If it's false evidence then you won't get far. However, I do have a lolicon-complex. (;
What is that? @Compassionate And yeah, I crack a lot of terrible jokes about myself... I'm Chandler Bing! :D
That's not necessarily true. You would be surprised. Treating a women right can change everything in what a women see's in the man. That's where the statement "a true man" comes in. Maybe you think your begin respectful, but your really not. "f-word is so much more diverse...." But this is what I'm trying to tell you. Instead of following all wrong in the world and using language that's not necessary, why not be a leader? Your behavior and language reflects on what people think and see in you.
Lolicon-complex or lolita-complex is when you're attracted to girls younger than you.
@e.cociuba : Really... we are not doing this topic. THIS is a violation of privacy. Don't go all serious, when clearly we are all adults (probably, one can never know ;) ) and be a sport. PS: I was kidding about the f-word. Don't admonish me, come on! And bad is good, Damon Salvatore anybody? :P
@Compassionate : You have it?! Well, the heart wants what it wants! No comments! :P
yes, yes, indeed. All five year old girls will be mine.! Muwhahaha!
You're funny! @Compassionate
What I meant was THIS topic that you're insinuating is a violation of privacy. The age thing is baby stuff compared to this. So one can't use the f-word but it okay to use sexy- a derivative of sex? Hmm, this in itself should be opened as a topic! And just so you know, I'm not all what you think, whatever it is that you're thinking.
@e.cociuba : '' Maybe you think your begin respectful, but your really not'' . "Well the only reason that you can't respond to it is because you know it's true:) '' ^^ It doesn't take one to read between the lines to get on what line you were thinking. But, whatever. 'If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too'' <<eh?
Damn! How much I miss you @amistre64 ! This topic went clearly awry after you left! PS: You debate great! :)
omg this post close it
