http://www.sketchtoy.com/38622561 What do I do next? @Mertsj

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you trying to factor?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

http://www.sketchtoy.com/38623399

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Pick out the factors of 15 that add up to -8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whaaaa?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Do you see that I wrote a list of factors of 15?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but none of the products are -8 > . <

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The first pair of factors is 1 x 15 But the sum of 1 and 15 is 1+15 which is 16 and is NOT -8

OpenStudy (mertsj):

We are looking for the factors of 15 that DO add up to -8

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Which pair of factors is that...the pair that add up to -8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oops.. it's -3 and -5

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Very good. That means that the factors are (x-3)(x-5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 ??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you're trying to factor x^2 - 8x + 15, then it comes out to be (x-3)(x-5) not sure how you got the x or 2x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, thank you.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yw

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can check your answer by expanding/FOILing out (x-3)(x-5) and you will get x^2 - 8x + 15 back again
