How did Emperor Justinian affect the shape of the Roman Empire? He gained or regained new lands in the west. Through lack of interest, he lost North Africa. He let barbarians chip away at the empire. He gave Asian provinces their independence.

He started to wage war on the many barbarian tribes who had overrun the Western Roman Empire. Justinian's army took back southern Spain, all of Italy, and northern Africa, until only the Franks in the rest of Europe, and the Saxons in Britain, remained.
