A ski club with 28 members went on a ski trip. Some members rented skis and the rest rented snowboards. If skis rent for $16.00 a day and snowboards rent for $19.00 a day, and the club spent $478.00 in rentals, how many ski club members rented skis?

Let K be the number of members renting sKis. Let N be the number of members renting sNowboards. \[K+N = 28\]because there are 28 members, and all rented either skis or snowboard \[16K + 19N = 478\]because skis rent for $16 and snowboards for $19 and the club spent $478 in total. Now you have two equations in two unknowns. Solve by graphing, substitution or elimination...
