You set the aperture.  Camera sets the speed to match.

In contras, in S you set the Shutter Speed and the camera sets the Aperture to match.

Basically, partially automatic modes that let you have a little more fine grained control over the fully automatic mode of the camera.  That way you can go for stop action or depth of field, but still be in an automatic mode where you don't need to worry about everything.

Basically it is how far has the opening into the camera been closed.  It is a light limiter.  F2 means not closed much at all.  F8 is like half closed. F22 is most the way closed.|dw:1371171215736:dw|It is a sprial opening, like air locks in sci-fi movies.  It chokes the volume of light.  Originally this was to control the level of exposure to the film.  Now it is used with digital camers, but many of them need as much light as possible!
